About The Lancet UK Policy Matters

Lancet UK Policy Matters is a website that aims to provide information to the public, professionals and policy makers about the evidence of how policies affect health.

The UK is undergoing a period of significant policy change from reforms to the national health service in England to much broader areas – such as housing, transport, benefits, and tax reforms – all of which may bring benefits or risks to the health of the population.

We want to help the general public, health professionals, policy makers and anyone involved in health to understand what the evidence tells us about whether these policy changes will be beneficial or harmful to health.

Our website aims to develop a library of policy summaries that look at the evidence of how existing and planned policy changes will affect health.

We want to provide accessible information and a platform for interaction so that people can really get involved in the debate and tell us their story.

This project is a collaboration between The Lancet and a team of public health registrars in England. As well as tackling health reform, the website provide information in various domains drawn from the 2010 Social Determinants of Health Report by Professor Sir Michael Marmot: health and healthcare, healthy lives, children, successful lives, employment and income, and homes and neighbourhoods.

Listen to the Lancet Podcast about the launch of The Lancet UK Policy Matters.

The Lancet UK Policy Matters was co-founded by public health specialty registrars Robert W Aldridge, Katie J Cole and Louise Hurst in conjunction with The Lancet. This Lancet microsite launched in May 2011.

When the site was launched, the Lancet UK Policy Matters aimed to collect personal narratives on the impact of health reforms. This aspect of the site has been retired, but all the content is still available online here.
